What is HPV?
Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) is the most commonly sexually transmitted infection in the United States. Almost 99% of cervical cancers are caused by HPV, if the cells in the cervix become enlarged, cervical cancer can occur. There are 100 types of diagnosable HPV, but most types of HPV are considered low risk for cervical cancer. However, two types are considered high risk, HPV-16 and HPV-18. HPV is so common, that it is said nearly all sexually active men and women will get the virus at some point in their lives. Regular screening for HPV can help prevent cervical cancer.
